Lymph node cancer and thyroid

Hi, I recently finished 4 weeks of Radiotherapy on lymph nodes in the centre of my chest. The doctor at the time said it was most likely lung cancer but they hadn't found anything so it's probably unseen, I had PET scans that showed up the nodes. During these 4 weeks I had an appointment with ENT and apparently nodes on the thyroid were showing there as well so the doctor did biopsies on either side.

I've been concentrating on getting over the effects and my last session of Radiotherapy was Tuesday and I had an appointment with ENT this Thursday gone, I was told the thyroid is cancerous and treatable but needs to come out. The Consultant is going to ring me next Thursday, I'm going to need a pre assessment before the operation and hopefully it will be done in the next 4 weeks.

Now I'm completely confused, the Radiotherapy doctor told me and my husband over the phone that all the therapy will do is give me a bit more time from between a month, or a year. These last few weeks have been stressful having to tell family and friends but I just don't know what to think now.. I must say that I've had excellent treatment, they have given me food supplements, pain relief and liquid to help with swallowing.
