Hello Everyone,

First of all thank you for listening!
My Mum was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer a year ago, after taking her to A&E with a droop in her face (expecting to be told she’d had a stroke).

The cancer is terminal. Mum’s fighting on and surprising everyone!
It’s great to see this and obviously we would rather she was here than not but I feel like our lives are on hold are we are just waiting!
This has been compounded by the current pandemic as it hasn’t allowed us to perhaps create the experiences we would like Mum to have.

How do you try and carry on with life, wanting to keep your loved one here whilst trying to grieve the fact they are going to die and knowing that for this living hell to be over means they will have passed away which is the last thing we want?

  • Hi  and welcome to the Macmillan Online Community although sorry that you needed to find us and especially sorry to hear about your mum and the challenges you are all facing during this time.

I lost my 92 year old mum rather suddenly back in November (not cancer), we live a few hours away so had to get down to the hospital she was taken to but once we got there and after a discussion with the clinical staff I was not allowed into the hospital. I am in the COVID Extremely Vulnerable Group and it was just too dangerous for me to go in..... it was a hard decision but the correct one for the rest of my family.

A terminal cancer diagnosis in the family brings many questions, confusion and lots of stress but talking with other people who are walking the same type of journey will help you navigate this rollercoaster.

The Community is organised into dedicated support groups so can I recommend you join our supportive Carers only and supporting someone with incurable cancer groups, as these will be good places to connect with others supporting family members on the same type of cancer journey.

To join a groups just click on the links above then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘New Thread’ or hit the box with the X on the top right (phones), you could just copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.
