One Day at a Time

Hello everyone,

It is so comforting to know there are so many people going through something similar who are there to support and compare notes with. I am a week on from a mastectomy with auxiliary node clearance. The operation went ok I think. Came home the following day and on my first night, I slept for fourteen hours. I has 2 chest drains and a Pico dressing, so mobility wasn’t great. I felt like I had shopping with me everywhere I went. The first drain came out a couple of days later but the second one took a while and eventually came out after five days.

live been given the arm exercises but I wasn’t expecting the array of sensations in my arm and armpit. It’s like having severe sunburn on your upper arm with the skin being so tight but knowing you have to move it, otherwise it will be worse later. Then the feeling someone has their fist in your armpit, but when you check with a mirror, there’s nothing there. Your chest area feels like someone is pushing down on you, all bruised and nervy and it feels either numb or super sensitive. I would love to know if this is all ‘normal’ and if, over time the sensations will calm down a bit. I have my appointment with the wound care team next week, so I’m expecting a lot of support too.

thanks all,

happy to be here x

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read the problems you're experiencing at the moment but you've come to the right place to ask questions, share experiences and get support.

The community is divided up into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the breast cancer group. To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions in the same way as you posted here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.

  • Thank you so much, I’ve now joined the breast cancer forum and will add to my profile. I’ve already seen some great comments on my arm pain. It looks like I’m not alone. X

  • No problem . One of the great things about this community is that you can nearly always find someone who has experienced the same thing as yourself to compare experiences with.
