I’ve joined this site because my mum was diagnosed with mesothelioma on Thursday. She’s only 73. The whole family is utterly devastated. My nana (her mum) died of the same thing but she worked in an ammunition factory during the war so we know this is where it was picked up. Mum has only ever worked in offices but her first job was in an office in a metal foundry and it’s thought that either this, or her dad bringing fibres home on his clothes from his job, is the cause. She’s been told she only has 12 months. I’m in disbelief and shock. I feel like I’m grieving even though she’s still here. She has an oncology appointment in a couple of weeks time so we will know more then. 2020 was bad enough but 2021 is looking worse.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Online Community, a Community that no one really looks to see themselves joining, and so sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis.

I have asbestosis so do understand some of the challenges but in my case it’s stable with my main cancer being an incurable blood cancer.

A incurable cancer diagnosis brings a lot of confusion, stress and many questions but talking with other people who are on the same type of journey can help a lot.

The Community is organised into support groups so you may want to start by joining our supportive Mesothelioma group as this is the place where you will connect with others walking the treatment journey both as patient or family.

Follow the above link then choose ‘click to join' or ‘join’ when the page opens. You can then introduce yourself, post questions or just  join in with existing discussions by clicking on 'reply'.

Talking with others caring for family and friends will help a lot so do checkout our Carers onlyFamily and friends and Supporting someone with incurable cancer Groups as you will connect with others walking the same journey supporting family and friends through their cancer journey.

It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listing ear.

Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

    All the very best.
