I have recently been diagnosed with stage 2 cancer and having a single mastectomy next week. I have been offered reconstruction with an implant but advised that things won't look even. I am wondering if I should bother with the implant- especially as they only last 10 years. I am 49 and pretty flat chested - wondered if anyone had had this done .....I think I don't like the prospect of having only one boob but wonder if the implant is actually worth it... any advice gratefully received...
Hi Charlie Lou and a warm welcome to the Online Community, a Community that no one really looks to see themselves joining, and so sorry to hear about your diagnosis.
A cancer diagnosis brings a lot of confusion, stress and many questions but talking with other people who are on the same type of journey can help a lot.
The Community is organised into support groups so you may want to start by joining our supportive Breast cancers and Breast cancer for the under-50s groups as this is the place where you will connect with others walking the treatment journey both as patient or family.
Follow the above links then choose ‘click to join' or ‘join’ when the page opens. You can then introduce yourself, post questions or just join in with existing discussions by clicking on 'reply'.
It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listing ear.
Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

All the very best.
Hi Charlie Lou
I have a single mastectomy planned for the 28th Jan. However due to future oncology treatment, immediate reconstruction wasn't advised. So its mastectomy, treatment and then reconstruction. I'm hoping that the reconstruction will be with my own fat rather than a implant. But I'll have a period of not having anything whilst I heal and be treated I'm hoping to find some peace with the situation before reconstruction.
Take care
Sue

That's rough to have to go through a 2nd operation but at least you can take your time to make your mind up. All the very best for your op .....if I think of any top tips post op I'll ping you a note. Just taken the Christmas Tree down and for the first year ever am really glad to see it go!!! Keep smiling.
