Feeling selfish as quite scared......

Hello!
I have joined this support area as my best friend has recently been diagnosed with Thyroid cancer. She is 38. People talk about close ones getting cancer all the time and whilst always sad to hear, I totally underestimated how much impact it has on people close to a person who has just been diagnosed.

I say I feel selfish in my header  as I think I am.  I’m scared, I’m angry, I’m worried I won’t do or say the right thing, and mainly I don’t know how she feels as I have never had to deal with such things  (yes I have asked her but I know she is covering things up)....

A perfect example is she is scared her surgery won’t happen because of Covid.... I mean what do I say? I feel like if I say ‘don’t worry it will be fine’ I may be giving false hope and if I say ‘well, you’ll just have to wait and see’ it sounds like I am not bothered.....

So anyway, I guess I am here to see how people cope as a support function, and understand from others how to process information and be the best friend I could ever be.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Online Community, a Community that no one really looks to see themselves joining, and so sorry to hear about your friends diagnosis and wonderful you want to be the ‘best friend ever’

A cancer diagnosis can indeed bring a lot of confusion, stress and many questions but talking with other people who are on the same type of journey can help a lot.

The Community is organised into support groups so you may want to start by joining our supportive Thyroid cancer group as you will connect with others walking the treatment journey both as patient or family.

Follow the above link then choose ‘click to join' or ‘join’ when the page opens. You can then introduce yourself, post questions or just  join in with existing discussions by clicking on 'reply'.

You may also find our Family and friends group a great benefit as you will connect with others supporting family through their cancer journesy.

It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support or just a listing ear.

Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

    All the very best.
