Hi

I have recently been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, I'm on my 3rd week of first cycle treatment.

I m usually strong and positive and I try to see positive things even in bad situations.

However I'm finding myself riding a rollercoaster of emotions one minute I'm ok, the next I feel lost.

Just wanted to introduce myself and say hi to everyone here, wishing you all the best duringn these hard times.

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read that you've recently been diagnosed with myeloma and I can quite understand the rollercoaster of emotions that you are feeling at the moment. You might like to have a look through this from Macmillan on cancer and your emotions as it gives tips on how to cope.

You say that you're "usually strong and positive" but it's okay not to be. Unfortunately, there is a lot of pressure put on us by people who don't have cancer to be "strong and positive".

No one can feel positive all the time and it's normal to feel scared, angry, upset, sad or depressed at times. There's no evidence that positive thinking can make treatments more effective or stop cancer coming back but being told to be "positive" can make you feel that it's your fault if treatment does not go well.

Likewise when people say you must be strong it's not always helpful as it may make you feel under pressure to be brave or strong all the time. It might make it harder to ask for help when you're not coping so well.

The community is divided up into cancer specific groups so you might like to join the myeloma group where you can ask questions, share experiences and get support from others who have that type of cancer.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post your questions in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.
