Hello, I was diagnosed with the Brca 2 gene mutation roughly 6 years ago and knew I had options when I was 30 but was told to be vigilant in the mean time. I locked the "processing" away and said to myself I'd deal with it when I'm 30, well I'm 2 years away now and never really processed what it meant for me.
I've had a breast lump scare at the beginning of this year and was told I needed to start thinking about having children soon because the NHS wont support any fertitly treatment/ivf (to ensure my future child wont carry the gene) after the ripe old age of 30. The prospect of me having children in the next two years is non existent, this is fine with me, if I need to consult privately after 30 I will.
However, I dont believe I never really processed what all of this means for me. My anxiety has turned up a good few notches this year from Covid and the general connect to illness but its opened up a can of worms for me worrying about getting ill and fixating on dying and not knowing what there is out there for me after the age of 30. I feel like I've lost my opportunity to start living.
I'm obtaining health related anxiety counselling but it was suggested I reach out to a support group of similar people who have the gene mutation and are apprehensive about their future.
Many thanks!
Hi VicEva and welcome to the online community
It does sound like you have a lot to think about but it's great that you've reached out to this community.
I can see that you've already found and joined the BRCA positive group and I'm sure if you copy and paste your message from here into a new post there you'll find support from other women who are in the same situation as you. When you're ready to do that clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there where you can start a new post in the same way as you started this one.
When you feel up to it, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
