Hi I’m new to this group. I was diagnosed this week after my first screening.
Im having an op in 4 weeks time. I thought about going private but after speaking to my nhs consultant privately she recommended staying nhs. But surely the quicker this is done the better.
Im terrified and just keep crying now confused whether to stay nhs or private.
Any advice welcome

  • Hi Magtie

A scary time being diagnosed with cancer, that’s only natural and happens to us all so be assured you are in good company

i have private health care, but having been through this cancer roller coaster twice before my recent diagnosis, I was really happy to be cared for by the NHS and I can say that the whole process from diagnosis to treatment has gone to plan, on time and I couldn’t fault anything. I’m a firm believer in our NHS and my private health care is a job perk useful in some circumstances. Hopefully others here will be able to offer confirmatory or contrary comments to assist you.

do cry when you feel the need, it really does help. Try to take things one small step at a time. Be good to yourself.

Keep posting I hope you find it helpful and all the best for your treatment

  • Hi and a second welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read that you've just been diagnosed with cancer and I can totally understand what a scary time this will be for you. There is no right or wrong way to feel when you've just been diagnosed and you may find this information from Macmillan on cancer and your emotions helpful to have a look through.

I had a peek at your profile to see what type of cancer you have been diagnosed with but you haven't completed it yet. I can see that you've joined but not yet posted in the breast cancer group so presume this is the type of cancer that you have. The other members of the group are very friendly and will be only too happy to answer your questions as best as they can, share their experiences with you and give you support. When you're ready to post clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there. You can then introduce yourself and post questions in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you feel up to it, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
