Hi I’m new to the group and just need to talk.

My mum has Oesophageal cancer and after a CT scan and a laparoscopic examination last Tuesday we were told Wednesday because of her age (75) size of tumour the can’t operate. Also told it’s not a nice cancer - not sure what that means - so options limited. Not sure how long she has and anything that’s fine is to make her more comfortable and prolong like. Mum had two stents put in Friday and tried some soft foods yesterday but has been sick so back on drip. She’s having a swallow test tomorrow to see what’s going on. Just not sure what to do or how to plan.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community, a Community that no one ever really plans to see themselves joining, and so sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis.

A cancer diagnosis brings a lot of confusion, stress and many questions but talking with other people who are on the same type of journey helps a lot.

I had a totally different type of cancer but the Community has various support groups and I see you have found our Gullet (oesophagus) cancerrain tumour group, this may be a place where you will connect with others walking the treatment journey both as a patient or family.

Follow the above link then introduce yourself, post questions or just  join in with existing discussions by clicking on 'reply'.

You may also find our Carers only, Family and friends and Supporting someone with incurable cancer groups a great benefit as you will connect with others supporting family through their cancer journey.

Its always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support or just a listing ear.

The service is open every day 8am to 8pm and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here for more information.

You can also email them, use the online chat and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

    All the very best.

  • Hi . I just wanted to say hello and ask you how your mum is doing. My mum also had oesophageal cancer, and was 73 when it was diagnosed at a very advanced stage, so that surgery wasn’t an option. I just want to let you know that I’m thinking of you, and hoping that all is as well as possible. BP x
