Hello everyone,

My friend has been diagnosed with bowel cancer and I’m not sure how I can best support him, I’d love to hear from people who’ve been in a similar situation.

He’s undergoing chemotherapy for several months and has an ileostomy bag.

The hospital have recommended that he does build up to some regular walking / exercise before an operation, but he seems nervous to leave the house. He’s understandably feeling quite fragile and doesn’t have many clothes that feel comfy so I think his confidence has been knocked. I know it’s just clothes, but I can’t help but feel some comfy clothes that he felt good in would help his confidence. Any tips on comfy stylish clothes for people ileostomy bags?

I’m keen to support him with cooking and nutrition too to help boost his energy and immunity.

If anyone has any advice it would be gratefully received.

B xx

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community, a Community that no one ever really plans to see themselves joining, and so sorry to hear about your friends diagnosis but great that you looking to support him.

A cancer diagnosis brings a lot of confusion, stress and many questions but talking with other people who are on the same type of journey helps a lot.

I had a totally different type of cancer but the Community has various support groups and see you have joined our Bowel (colon and rectum) cancer group, this is the place where you will connect with others walking the treatment journey both as a patient or family.

Follow the above link hen introduce yourself, post questions or just  join in with existing discussions by clicking on 'reply'.

You may also find our Carers only and Family and friends groups a great benefit as you will connect with others supporting family through their cancer journey.

Its always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support or just a listing ear.

The service is open every day 8am to 8pm and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here for more information.

You can also email them, use the online chat and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

Our Online Information and Support Section  is a good place to find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.

    All the very best.
