mum is 77 and has had multiple strokes since she was 46 last one three weeks ago. she has cancer and has deteriorated over the last two weeks, hardly eating, drinking, sleeping alot and struggling to walk. She has started to see animals run across the room and scary masked faces, im worried this is end of life or is this the stroke? the drs couldn't give us any life expectancy, shes untreated as her cancer is rare and aggressive and she has other health problems, im a mess, struggling to cope with potentially losing my mum so soon after losing my mother in law in May.

  • Hello painter69

this is a really difficult situation for you to deal with, the painful experience of losing your mother in law will no doubt surface again to compound that of seeing your mother going through this illness. I really hope you can manage to get some peace to enable you to process everything that is going on.

you are going through an awful lot so please don’t expect too much from yourself and take slow deep breaths when things start to overwhelm you. Concentrating on your mother and thinking about ways you can assist her I hope will give you something to focus on and step by small step help you cope a little better with this awful situation.

my late wife had cancer and was treated at first in hospital where she suffered horrendous hallucinations. Due to the stage of her cancer I was able to have her moved to a hospice where she continued to experience hallucinations until the expert care at the hospice balanced her medication and the hallucinations ceased. So for my wife the imbalanced medications triggered the hallucinations, something I was unaware could happen at the time. I would suggest your have a look at your mother’s medication and research the possible side effects and talk to your mothers health care professionals about your concerns.

Sending every good wish to you and your mother and I hope others on this site can provide more useful help to you

  • Hi  and a second welcome to the Online Community, a Community that no one ever really plans to see themselves joining and so sorry to hear about your mum.

If your mum is on any strong pain meds this can cause hallucinations. I was in the same position leading up to and during my early treatment - it’s not a great experience and even worse for those looking on.

It sound like you having to deal with a lot so could I suggest that you connect in with other people supporting family through their cancer journey..... a burden shared gets a touch lighter.
