Is this usual?

Hi, I was told I have breast cancer on Tuesday, the same day as having 4 mammograms, ultrasound and biopsy. I won’t have the results of the biopsy until next week.
Is this usual? I thought the whole point of having the biopsy was to confirm if there is cancer.
Has anyone experienced being told they have cancer without the biopsy results?
Thanks

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that you've recently been told that you have breast cancer. I know what a difficult time this will be for you.

  • Hello Joolzc

sorry you have had this diagnosis But you have found a great place for help and support.

it was some years ago now but I do remember my wife being told at an initial consultation after scans that she had breast cancer. The biopsy is required to establish exactly what type of cancer it is and what the best way of treating the cancer is.

my own diagnosis was more along the lines you would expect but being male the chances of the lump in my breast being cancerous was very remote (only about 350 cases in males a year compared to 55,000 in females). So my investigation was gp, referral to hospital and within 2 weeks seen, to be told it wasn’t cancer but I was sent thank heavens for a scan just to put my mind at rest given my history of cancer with my wife. The team doing the ultrasound scan found the lump the doctors and hospital found which wasn’t cancerous but also detected another lump lurking behind the first one. That was the one I was concerned about. The scan team took a biopsy of that second lump and I then got the results to say yes it was cancer, how fast is was growing, what stage it was and the treatment plan.

To me it sounds like you are in good hands and matters to speed your recovery are well underway.

Wishing you all the very best

Cancer may affect my body, but I won’t let it affect my spirit

    Hi joolzc

I’m still waiting on my biopsy results but they have confirmed I have breast cancer. I’ll know more on Thursday what treatment I’ll have. And with my husband Who’s diagnosed leukaemia it’s a pretty hard time.
I wish you well with everything
