Hi
My son has had an operation for a massive tumour on his right lung. He recovered very quickly as he is quite fit. He has just had PET scan and has a tumour on the adrenal gland on the RHS. The tumour has grown 4cm in 8 weeks and he has to wait a further 2 weeks for details of treatment. Is this usual in these cases? we are all very worried as he is 4hrs away from us
Hi @trucker47,
Sorry to hear about your son; it must be extra worry when things impact our children. In my case it is my wife who has the cancer but fortunately for us her cancer has now been stable for many years so it has just become a fact of life to us.
While it can sometimes seem like nothing is happening behind the scenes a whole team will be meeting to discuss his case and come up with a collective joint best approach based on the experience of the team rather than just a single doctor. This tends to mean we all get the best possible treatment - it can be a worry though as we are told time and time again that treatment sooner is better, it is worth reflecting that is mostly to get people to see their GP in the first place.
It sounds to me like your son is being treated really effectively. I don't know if you do skype or anything like that, it can really help to see the other person as well as just talk to them.
Was the tumour lung cancer or something else? There are a whole load of groups on here specific to different forms of cancer and of course you would be welcome to join for example Parents of children with cancer forum though that is not very active while Family and friends - Discussion Forum has a wider focus and is naturally more active.
In terms of your worry, that is totally normal, does anyone ever stop caring for their children.
<<hugs>>
Steve
Hi trucker47
Really sorry to read of your sons illness and wishing him a speedy recovery. He has been through a lot already but he is fit and that really helps with recovery. Being positive about recovery also helps so try to get him to set targets such as getting back to his favourite sport, albeit in stages.
wanted to say that the care available after diagnosis is brilliant and the doctors and nurses pull out all the stops to provide the best care in the best timescale available. I have been through the treatment of cancer 3 times and can say I could not have asked for more care and help, even our pharmacist was brilliant and extremely helpful. There will be a really great team helping your son through this. But it’s not just your son who needs support. You will have your own fears and do take care of yourselves as well, you will need your strength as well.
A great idea from Steve to overcome the 4 hour distance.
take care and really hope your son gets a favourable treatment plan underway ASAP.
