Hi everyone,

On Thursday, following a CT scan I was told I have a tennis ball size tumour in my left kidney. A bit far removed from a water infection which was the original diagnosis so it was a bit of a shock. The  word cancer was used but at this early stage of diagnosis no mention of type or anything else was made, I'm not sure how much they can tell from a scan. I have a couple of weeks of tests ahead of me starting with another CT scan tomorrow.

The consultant told me that, as I am 51, reasonably fit and the mass appears to be contained within the kidney, the prognosis is good and plans are already being made to remove the kidney as soon as they are sure that it hasn't spread anywhere else.

I am sure the emotional rollercoaster will launch at some point soon but for now, being an engineer, my practical head has landed squarely on my shoulders. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. So, and I hope this is ok, can I ask if anyone has any advice on finding life insurance post diagnosis? I have searched on-line but it looks a bit of a minefield so if anyone has had any experience I would really appreciate any help.

Practical bit aside, it is really good to know that this place is here for when the rollercoaster does start rolling.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community, although I am am always sorry to see folks finding us and so sorry to hear about your Kidny Cancer diagnosis - shock indeed

I getting getting life insurance once and faild completely but from what others say it is a minefield indeed and is often only offered at great cost or a number of years after treatment is completed but let’s look for others to come t on this.

A cancer diagnosis brings a lot of confusion, stress and many questions but talking with other people who are on the same type of journey helps a lot.

The Community has various support groups so can I direct you to our Kidney cancer group as this is the place where you will connect with others walking the treatment journey both as patient or family.

Follow the link I've created above then choose ‘click to join' when the page opens.

You can then introduce yourself and post questions selecting '+New' or '+' (depending on your device) you can also join in with existing discussions by clicking on 'reply'.

It’s always good to talk - our Macmillan Support Services provides lots of ways to connect. The service is open every day 8am to 8pm and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00. Clicking here will give you more information.

You can also email them, use the online chat and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

Our Online Information and Support Section  is a good place to find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.

    All the very best.
