Good morning, hope you're all keeping well. I'm after some advice regarding my Mother.
In 2018 she had her eye removed due to cancer in the eye, which was thankfully successful and was told she would need a liver scan every 3 months which happened up until 9 months ago. We then received a letter from the GP surgery apologising that they hadn't referred her for a scan and then we went for a scan on the 18th July, and we phoned up 2 days later(20th) to find out that two lesions have been found and will need a MRI and CT scan.
We went for MRI/CT scan on the 27th July, and on the 30th July we phoned up for the results at the GP practice and the receptionist told us no action required(we assumed it was all clear).
I then booked a British holiday for Mum 1st - 5th Sept for getting all clear and try and cheer her up(she loves the beach)
During the past 4 months she had been contacting the doctors for bad back pain and top of leg, which the doctor has been treating her for arthritis. She then phoned up before our holiday for different meds has the pain got a lot worse and he sent her for a x Ray on the 16th August to see if it was arthritis or needed hip replacement.
Again, we phoned for the results the following week and was told no action was needed and given her stronger painkillers.
She then phoned up on the 26th August asking what the pain is and that is in agony, she received a phone call from a different doctor to her usual and he then told her the first scans showed she has cancer with possible spread, whilst she was alone.
She didn't take much in at the time due to her panicking and asked for a call back on the 28th when I was able to take the call. He explained to me that it looks like cancer has spread and could be causing the pain. This was the Friday before we went away, he said it will be good for her to get away and we will hear from the hospital by post while we was away.
Anyway, we got back home to no appointments or letters, I then tried to call the doctor back has he said to ring back for a urgent discussion if we hadn't heard nothing. The doctor don't seem to want to speak to me and only get as far as his PA. She explained on the Wednesday 9th September that Sheffield hospital had written to Birmingham hospital for a appointment. ( We live in Birmingham, she had her eye operation in Sheffield).
Now today we still haven't heard nothing and the pain is getting worse and now starting to be sick, she hasn't eaten well for months( which the doctor said could be side affect to painkillers).
Could someone point me in the right direction for treatment and support please?
Thanks so much
Hi and welcome to the Online Community, although I am always sorry to see folks finding us and so sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis, the challenges she is facing and the run around you are all experiencing.
I will try and direct you to some places where you can get some support but in my long cancer experience when you are struggling to get answers, when you are getting the run around you have to become very assertive and get your pointy elbows into the system - frustrating I know but its the only way...... so you need to get a phone call with her GP ASAP.
Cancer diagnosis brings a lot of confusion, stress and many questions but talking with other people who are on the same type of journey helps a lot.
This Community is organised into various support groups and this is the list is for our Cancer specific Groups.
Follow the link I've created above and have a look for the best group(s) then choose ‘click to join' when the page opens.
You can then introduce yourself and post questions selecting '+New' or '+' (depending on your device) you can also join in with existing discussions by clicking on 'reply'.
You may find our Carers only and Family and friends groups a great benefit as you will connect with others supporting family through their cancer journey.
It’s always good to talk - our Macmillan Support Services provides lots of ways to connect. The service is open every day 8am to 8pm and it's free to call. Clicking here will give you more information.
You can also email them, use the online chat and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.
Our Online Information and Support Section is a good place to find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.
All the very best.
