Hello everyone.
So this week has prompted a meltdown. I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 44. The cancer is HER2 positive so treatment plan is currently 4 cycles of chemo and then surgery. During my first chemo as a family we shielded at home and I felt OK, however my second chemo was Thursday and with the youngest children back at school (first year high school) I am having a cancer/covid meltdown! I am fortunate that my husband can deal with all the practical stuff, so I thought it would be best for me to shield from them all. But I just can't imagine distancing myself from them all for months, its heartbreaking. I don't think my main concern is getting covid, but about potential delays with my treatment. I would be really grateful to know how others are managing the risks-I am sure there are so many of us in this situation. With sincere thanks.
Hi and welcome to the Online Community, although I am so sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your diagnosis.
Yes COVID has brought a lot of challenges, I am 5 years post treatment and am still at great risk but don’t have children in the house but 4 granddaughters who visit. It’s all about observing good hygiene and risk assess who you come in contact with and where you go. I think community contracted COVID is more a problem than your children being in school.
But it would be good to talk with other people who are on the same type of journey.
The Community is organised into various support groups so can I first direct you to our Breast cancer for the under-50s group as this will connect you with people walking the treatment journey.
Follow the link I've created above then choose ‘click to join' on the page that opens.
You can then introduce yourself and post questions selecting '+New' or '+' (depending on the device you're using) and join in with existing discussions by clicking on 'reply'.
It’s always good to talk, our Macmillan support line is open every day from 8am to 8pm and it's free to call. Clicking here will give you more information on what the Support Line offers. Alternatively, if it's easier for you then you can email them or use the online chat.
Our Online Information and Support Section is a good place to find information covering cancer diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.
All the very best.
