My best friend nagged me

Hello

This is my first post so bear with me.

A couple of days after my 67th birthday, I notice spotting in my undies. I was going to ignore it but by best friend insisted I get it checked out. I'm so glad I listened to her. After a phone consultation with my GP I was referred for a 2 week cancer screening pathway. Had ultrasound, hysteroscopy, biopsy (under anaesthetic) then MRI, CT Scan and appointment with Consultant. I have been diagnosed with Endometrial Cancer. Still trying to take it in!

Next Thursday I'm having a Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy.

My sister says I'm too calm!

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm very glad that your best friend nagged you into seeing a GP as most cancers have a better success rate when caught early.

As the community is divided up into groups, I'm going to suggest that you join the Womb (uterus) cancer forum where you can ask questions, share experiences and get support from others with endometrial cancer.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting '+New' or '+' (depending on the device you're using) and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

There is no right or wrong way to react when you are told that you have a cancer diagnosis. In fact staying calm is definitely preferable to worrying yourself silly, so take no notice of your sister on how you should react. I remember feeling numb when told about my melanoma diagnosis but, like you, I was calm and continued that way throughout my treatment. I'm not saying there weren't times when I wasn't anxious or worried, but I could generally shake those feelings off by occupying myself.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
