My sister has just been told that her head & neck cancer is back, also in lymph nodes & now cancer in both lungs. Already been through devastating radiotherapy & chemo, where she suffered all of the potential side effects, plus surgery to remove the primary tumour during lockdown as treatment didn't get rid of that. No cancer visible 7 weeks ago, nows it back so quickly & spread. She was due to have surgery to remove the latest tumour in her neck but that's now not on the table. She's been offered immunotherapy to possibly buy her some time but there is an alarming amount of possible side effects, & statistics & we're just not sure if it's a good idea. Has anyone had it, thought about it or decided not to have it?

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that your sister has recently discovered that her cancer is back and has spread to her lungs. This must be an extremely difficult time for you all and it's natural to want to know as much as possible about the treatment that's being offered.

The community is divided up into groups so I'm going to recommend  a couple for you to join. The first is the Head and neck cancer forum and the second is the Secondary lung cancer forum where you can ask questions, share experiences and get support from others who have this type of cancer.

To join just click on the links I've created and then choose 'click to join' on the pages that open. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting '+New' or '+' (depending on the type of device you're using) and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your sister's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

How long more will she get... And what are the side effects.. Will she have a good quality of life throughout the treatment? Ask her what she thinks & feels. Xxx

Hi , I’m sorry to hear about your sisters diagnosis and that it has spread so quickly. I am currently on an Immunotherapy drug called Pembrolizumab for metastatic melanoma. To be honest I didn’t consider not having it, I was so glad that it was available. I was told that it doesn’t work for everyone and that they do not know who it will work on, but at the time I first started it in April 2016 the newspapers were full of Jimmy Carter’s good response to it. The range of side effects were off putting but not everyone gets every side effect, I only suffered from an all over body rash for a few weeks after the first dose and never again, and a feeling of tiredness for a few days after every dose.

I have a different cancer to your sister and perhaps a different immunotherapy drug, so please do ask in the Head and neck cancer group for their experience. If there are any questions you want to ask me I’m happy to answer, you may also find the following link useful,

    https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/treatment/your-treatment-options/questions-to-ask-your-healthcare-team

It gives some questions to ask to help make your sisters decision easier. For me back in 2016 I was not expecting to be here in 2017, and I was very grateful that the NHS approved my drug 2 months before I needed it, it’s the reason why I’m still here now.

    Take care
