Hello everyone,
my husband was told he had rectal cancer today at our hospital appointment with the specialist we met. I know this is his journey, and I’m along for the ride, although in reality it is our journey too.
my head is all over the place, but I really want to find ways to help him and not add to his burdens. And maybe keep some shred of sanity too
We have just under a month till his operation, two weeks of which he’ll have to self isolate. It’s serious but not without a big chunk of hope attached.
I was hoping maybe for suggestions how best to face this strange new future - with him but apart from him too. I never expected to be here but I want so much to be the best I can be. Any help or ideas where to start would gratefully received. Thank you.
Hi and welcome to the online community
I'm sorry to hear that your husband has just been diagnosed with rectal cancer and I do understand what a whirlwind of emotions you'll both be feeling. I didn't have the same type of cancer as your husband but I remember how numb and shocked I felt when told.
The community is divided up into groups, so I'm going to recommend a couple for you to join. The first is the Bowel (colon and rectal) cancer forum group as this will give you the chance to ask questions and share experiences with others who have this type of cancer. The second is the Carers only forum group which is a safe and supportive place to share your worries with others who have a loved one with cancer.
To join either or both, just click on the links and then choose 'click to join' on the pages that open. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting '+New' or '+' (depending on the device you're using) and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your husband's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
