Hi all,

I am a fellow newbie!

I only found out a day ago my mum has skin cancer and find it hard to process but I have no idea what to expect as her carer or how it will affect her and what I can do to help her best beat this.

So any help, tips and just support would be appreciated so much. I live with her as well as my young 9 month old son is helping to keep us busy and my partner is also here to help as well as six other siblings.

I hope you are all staying safe.

Hi Starreen, welcome to the online community, I can see that you have already joined the carers group, well done, that’s a good place for carers to support each other, as caring for someone can bring its own set of challenges, and emotions. To ask for people experience about your Mums particular cancer type you could also join a cancer type group, they are not just for patients. There is a group for skin cancer, and there is a separate group for melanoma, you haven’t said what type of skin cancer your Mum has. I was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma 5 years ago, so that’s the group I joined.

You may find the information and support pages a good place to start finding out more ( I will put the link below) or you may prefer to talk to the Macmillan support line 0808 808 0000 which is open 8am to 8pm.

I hope the link helps and if I can help at all with my experience please just ask using the reply button.

    Best wishes

  • Hi  and a second welcome to the online community

I can see that my friend  welcomed you to the community a few days ago and suggested that you joined either the  group (link) or the Skin cancer forum group (link), depending on what type of cancer your mum has, so that you could find the information you wanted to help look after your mum.

I know it can be a bit daunting to join but I'm a a member of both groups and, if you're feeling a bit nervous about joining, can assure you that both groups are very friendly and welcoming so please do join us.

I'll watch out for you and hope to see you in one or other group soon.
