Hi, on the 15th May this year my 26 year old daughter was rushed to hospital after just five days of feeling unwell. The doctors thought she had sepsis and due to Coronavirus she was taken on her own in the ambulance. Later that evening we got a call to say she has leukaemia. Her white cell count was a staggering 216. By the next day she was on a ventilator and fighting for her life. I’m pleased to say that after her first round of chemotherapy she is now home and waiting for her bone marrow biopsy on Thursday. Fingers crossed she will be in introductory remission. She had so many plans, holidays, a wedding next year, but all has been put on hold. As a mum I felt and still feel quite useless. I can normally fix anything any of my four girls need but in this case all I can do is make sure appointments, medication etc are all sorted. I’m so angry that this has happened. I’m a strong believer that anything that happens, anyone we meet and choices we make are for a reason but this, this has got me. Are there any other parents out there feeling this way?
Hi and welcome to the Community but sorry to hear about your daughter.
Being diagnosed with a rare type of Lymphoma I understand the journey. Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a rare and aggressive type of blood cancer but good that she has been diagnosed quickly and treatment can start.
The medical side of this is out of your control and trust in her team is important but dealing with the battle between the ears is in your hands. Plans can be rescheduled, the most important thing now is to navigate the treatment journey.
We have our general Leukaemia group so follow the link I've created, join the group, then hit ‘start a discussion’ and you are ready to go.
You could then copy and paste the information from this first post into your new discussion or you can just join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'
You may also find our Family and friends group a benefit as you will connect with others supporting family through their cancer journey.
