My 75yr old mother-in-law, who lives with us, has just been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. My husband is an only child and is devastated. Our adopted son is 13 and doesn't know yet. I'm overwhelmed and don't know how to care for, comfort them all. We don't know what to expect. I don't know how to explain this to our son. Just looking for support and suggestions from people who have an understanding of this.

  • Hi and welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your mother in laws diagnosis and the challenges this has brought.

A cancer diagnosis indeed brings a lot of confusion, stress and many questions but I found talking with other people who are on the same type of journey helped a lot.

The Community is organised into various support groups so can I direct you to our very supportive Lung Cancer group as this will connect you with folks walking the treatment journey.

Follow the link I've created above, join the group, then hit ‘start a discussion’ and you are ready to go.

You could then copy and paste the information from this first post into your new discussion or you can just join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

I see you have found our Carers only group. This would help you connect with others supporting family through their cancer journey.

It’s always good to talk, so can I highlight the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 00 00 This service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00

Our Online Information and Support Section  is a good place to find information covering cancer diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.

    All the very best.

    Hi there

sorry to hear your news. I am going through the same thing myself at the moment. My dad was recently diagnosed with stage four lung cancer which has spread to the lymph nodes around his lungs and the lining of his stomach and also his brain. Although the cancer is incurable it can be treated and he just started immunotherapy two days ago.

I personally found it helped me to do a lot of reading around the subject of Lung Cancer and immunotherapy but obviously you have to take care which sites you look at. I looked mostly at the MacMillan Cancer site, the cancer research site and also the lung foundation site.

In the past a diagnosis such as this tended to mean a poor prognosis for the patient however immuno therapy can offer hope in that if it works it will hopefully stop the spread of the cancer and may even shrink it

I have found that the Lung Cancer Nurses at the local hospital have been brilliant. If I ring up with any questions or worries they answer them and have been very supportive.

if you want to chat more I’m here to listen and hopefully help. I think it does help to speak to people going through the same thing. My dad is 74.
