Hello.
Yesterday my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. We are both in shock but I am suffering from extreme anxiety, I cry all the time, and lay awake thinking all sorts of dark thoughts ( I have been like this pretty much since she had the biopsy 10 days ago) I want to be strong for her and not let my own health, mental and physical suffer but this fear of loss, of the unknown is overpowering. If anyone has a partner that has bc and can tell me how they are coping I would be very grateful, is this reaction normal? What can I do to help myself and my wife? This is all so new and although my family and friends are being incredibly supportive I've never felt more helpless or alone.
Hi and welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your wife’s diagnosis but I am pleased to say that you have found a safe place to find some support.
A cancer diagnosis indeed brings a lot of confusion, stress and many questions but I found talking with other people who are on the same type of journey helps a lot.
I see you have joined our supportive Breast cancer group. This is a good place to understand the treatment journey and there are a number of partners in the group.
You may also find our Carers only and Family and friends groups a benefit as you will connect with others supporting family through their cancer journey.
Follow the links I've created above, join the groups, then hit ‘start a discussion’ and you are ready to go.
You could then copy and paste the information from this first post into your new discussion or you can just join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.
It’s always good to talk, so can I highlight the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 00 00 This service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00
Our Online Information and Support Section is a good place to find information covering cancer diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.
All the very best.
Hi and welcome to the online community
I'm very sorry to hear that your wife has just been diagnosed with breast cancer and that you're suffering with extreme anxiety because of this. It's not unusual to feel scared and anxious about what's happening and you might find looking through this information from Macmillan helpful.
I can see that you've already found and joined the breast cancer group and I'm sure you'll find it great for asking questions about treatment, etc and sharing experiences with others who have a similar diagnosis to your wife. Clicking on the link I've created will take you directly to that group and you could copy and paste your post from here into a new post there after selecting 'start a discussion'.
I think you might also benefit from joining the family and friends group as it's a great place to share your worries with others who understand what it's like to have a loved one living with cancer.
If you'd like to join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your wife's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
