Tips on losing weight and getting fit in case I need surgery

Hello, my name is Diane and I'm a new cancer sufferer.  I am 75 years old and was diagnosed with Grade 1 womb cancer on 7 April this year and had a Mirena coil fitted a few days later.  Four weeks ago I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid and have started treatment for that.  These are in addition to  "multiple co morbidities" such as heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, obesity etc etc.

If the Mirena coil doesn't work, and presupposing that the Covid-19 situation is more under control, I may be offered a hysterectomy depending on the result of my next biopsy due on 14 August.  I would prefer that as then I'd know the cancer has gone.  However I may be considered too much at risk to undergo the anaesthetic.  I desperately need to lose weight and up my fitness levels.  The thyroid problem has, I think, been around for years so may well have added to my trouble trying to lose weight.

Any advice and tips would be appreciated.  I know "eat less, and do more" should be my go to line but I would like suggestions re best foods to eat and some exercise tips.  Many thanks.

  • Hi Diane and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read that you were diagnosed with womb cancer recently. Although I didn't have this type of cancer I know what a worrying time this will be for you and it's understandable that you want to do everything you can to prepare yourself for possible surgery.

As the community is divided up into groups, I'm going to recommend that you join the womb cancer group as this will give you the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and get support from others with a similar diagnosis.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Thanks for your warm welcome Latch brook.  I will join the womb cancer group as you suggest and have already added a little about myself on my profile page.
