My partner has been told he has oesophageal cancer, he’s had the last biopsies taken today. We are getting a call on Monday to discuss everything they have found. We know it has spread to lymph nodes and his liver, spleen and kidneys were showing something on the CT scan but they aren’t sure till they see the PET scan results. Has anyone been through anything like this? It’s all soo new to us, our heads are all over the place. Also looking for advice on telling children 4 & 8 years old. Thanks

Hello, i’m sorry to hear your news. I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer middle of last year. Do not despair. After a PET scan they discovered it had spread to liver lung and pelvis. So the chemo began. After chemo, more scans, although tough at times the scan showed i’d had a great response the the chemotherapy. Tail end of last year i went onto immunotherapy and the next scan showed this was not working. I immediately went back onto chemo but different drugs to the first lot of chemo. Latest scan shows very positive reaction to drugs so i am heading in the right direction.
We sat our two boys down and told them of my diagnosis, there were tears but when they saw how positive we were they seemed to find it a lot easier to handle. I think you have to be honest with them but give them information in small chunks as and when you think suitable.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your partners diagnosis but I am pleased to say that you have found a safe place to find some support.

A cancer diagnosis indeed brings a lot of confusion, stress and many questions but I found talking with other people who are on the same type of journey helped a lot.

The Community has many dedicated support groups so can I direct you to our supportive Gullet (oesophagus) cancerrain tumour group.

Follow the link I've created above, join the group, then hit ‘start a discussion’ and you are ready to go.

You could then copy and paste the information from this first post into your new discussion or you can just join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

You may also find our Carers only and Family and friends groups to be a benefit as you will connect with others supporting family through their cancer journey.

It’s always good to talk, so can I highlight the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 00 00. This service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00

Our Online Information and Support Section  is a good place to find information covering cancer diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.

    All the very best.
