Hello everyone,

I am just looking for some knowledge and advice if possible please. My mum and Dad live in Cyprus and mum was diagnosed with Bowel cancer 2 years ago. After a successful chemo treatment, radiotherapy and an  operation in 2018, the cancer returned in 2019 on the stomach wall which infiltrated the bladder and embedded itself on her pelvic wall so unable to remove the tumour. More radiotherapy last summer and this march they discover Secondaries in groin and lungs. She has now started Chemo again, a 2 hour session followed by chemo infusion over 48 hours every 2 weeks  for 3 months. They have said if it works then she will continue to have chemo every two weeks for the rest of her life.

With mum being in Cyprus and I am unable to get out there at the minute due to brits not being allowed in the country unless permanent residents, I am unable to get answers to questions I have, one of the main ones being what are the side effects of having long term chemo? How long can the body cope with having chemo long term? What do I need to know and prepare myself for.  Ultimately how do I support my mum and Dad whilst being in the Uk and then once I am able to get there?
Sorry for the lengthy post but would be good to get some advice if possible please.
thank you x

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that after being diagnosed with bowel cancer a couple of years ago, it's recently discovered that it's spread to your mum's lungs. This must be an incredibly difficult time for you all, especially as she's in Cyprus and you can't yet visit.

As the community is divided up into groups, I'm going to recommend that you join the bowel cancer and secondary lung cancer groups as this will give you the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and get support from others with a similar diagnosis to your mum.

To join just click on the links I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the pages that open. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

I see that you've already found and joined the family and friends group which is a great place to share your worries with others who understand what it's like to have a loved one living with cancer.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
