I’m seeking advice for my brother, who hasn’t got a dentist, is needing dental treatment, but not sure what we can do, his mouth is sore from treatment any way and he’s got several teeth that need treatment.
mad he’s not eating well he’s losing weight again. Any advice would be helpful, Rob is receiving treatment at the Marsden.

  • Hi, I would suggest he contacts his specialist nurse or consultant for advice as it may depend on the treatment he is having as to whether dental treatment is safe or if it increases his risk of developing an infection. If he does need treatment then he would probably need to be referred via the hospital or maybe 111, not sure given what's happening with dental treatment during the pandemic.

So get him to call his team asap.

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear that your brother needs to see a dentist but isn't registered with one. The NHS website says that during the pandemic:

"If you think you need urgent dental treatment, do not go to a dentist.

    Instead:

    • call your dentist
    • use the NHS 111 online service if you cannot contact your dentist or you do not have one

They can give you advice, help you contact an urgent dental service or arrange treatment if needed."

As the community is divided up into groups, if you could tell me what type of cancer your brother is being treated for then I could suggest a group for you to join where you could ask for advice on diet, etc.

In the meantime you might like to join the family and friends group which is a safe and supportive place to discuss your worries with others who have a loved one with cancer.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute it, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your brother's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Sorry to hear about your brother.
I needed an infected tooth pulled and had pleurisy 3 weeks later during my Chemo. Each time I phoned my nurse specialist and got to 111. Once I mentioned I was on cancer treatment, they helped very quickly. It was pre Covid, but they put me on antibiotics and halted my Chemo treatment for a few weeks.
