Dear All

hello! I’m new here post radiotherapy! Struggling with the after effects and the impact on my body more so than the surgery. Have had two surgeries excision and re-excision. Revealed high grade DCIS. I also have multiple sclerosis so oncologist being careful with treatment. Sadly the treatment has hit me sideways and I’m struggling more now than during/after surgery. Any tips on feeling less lethargic or avoiding post radiotherapy feelings gratefully received -many thanks

  • Hi Rachel , I see you had not received a welcome - so welcome..... but sorry to see you finding us and sorry to hear you are having challenges with your post treatment recovery.

Each cancer journey can be very different but I see you have put posts up in a few of the groups so let’s look for some of the folks to come along and help you out.

I had a rather different type of journey (see my profile) and had a very long post treatment recovery. Although I had 45 radiotherapy sessions it was the final chemo and Stem Cell Transplant that knocked me for 6. It took 3-4 months to get back on my feet and a further 20 months to say I was out the other end although with a very reduced immune system.

This rather good paper details the post treatment milestones, so worth a look. We also have our Life after cancer Group where folks hang out and share recovery stories. Go over and join and then have a look at the ‘discussions’ and join in where you feel you can.

Can I highlight our various Macmillan Support Line Services on 0808 808 00 00. This service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00 but check the link but you may find the service very busy at the moment.

All the very best and a virtual ((hug))

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read that you're struggling with the after effects of radiotherapy but it's great that you've reached out for help.

I can see that you've joined the breast cancer group and I'm sure if you post your questions into a new post there the members of the group will be happy to share their experiences with you.

To get to the group just click on the link I've created and then select 'start a discussion'. You could then copy and paste your question from here to save you typing it out again.

    Dear Highlander!

thank you so much for your reply and particular thanks for the paper to read. It makes absolute sense to me. I think I was feeling fairly well after surgery and before radiotherapy that the impact of radiotherapy has knocked me for 6! With the pandemic situation as well and not being able to see my closest of friends and just have a hug and a cuppa together is hitting me even harder. Hoping to try and do a short walk today. Challenge of the day!
It was a bad day yesterday emotionally so hopefully today will be better!

    Hi Rachel,

It's brilliant that you're feeling like doing a short walk today. Small goals like that definitely help so much.

I really feel for you not being able to see your friends to help you get through this.

Hoping you did have a better day today, stay strong, big hugs, xxx
