Hi I'm Gemma and I have not been to see my gp. I'm too scared to so I was hoping that I could get some advice as to weather I should be worried and bother my gp. I'm 36 and an ex smoker of 8 weeks, for the last 4/5 months I have constant pain inside my cheeks  and at the back of my tounge. It stops me from eating some days and is painful just resting, I do worry A LOT as I don't visit the dentist as I have a massive fear of them and they would be the ones to catch any sort of mouth cancer I think? Im unsure if I'm worried over nothing or if at this time I should try speak to my gp as they are so super busy. Any advice would be welome as the pain is horrid. I had pre cancerous cells removed 5 years ago from my cervix and was told I was hpvpositive but all clear there since then x Thanks for reading x

  • Hi

I think you know the important thing to do for your peace of mind is to ring your doctor.  Unfortunately no-one on here can give you any advice other than that because we are just people who have either experienced or been touched by cancer and aren't medical professionals.  That said, even medical professionals wouldn't be able to tell you whether it was cancer or not without seeing you.

My OH has a blemish on his face come up. He's had had one previously, having had it removed and been told it had had cancerous cells in it so he rang his doctor immediately.  He was told he would get a call back.  His doctor is different from mine and I must say, I have never been impressed with the treatment he's received in the past - so much so that he tried to change surgeries.

However, this was only last week, amid the coronavirus and he did get a phone call the next morning and his doctor insisted on him coming into the surgery.that day  He was asked the usual coronavirus questions, his doctor wore full PPE and he was given a mask to wear.  He was examined and was told it was ok.

So, within a day, his mind was put at rest - and he wasn't even in pain!  You are clearly in pain - it could be anything causing your pain, more especially as you haven't visited a dentist - it could be a nerve from a tooth - or anything.  Until you pluck up the courage to visit a doctor then your mind won't be put at risk.

Please give your surgery a call today.
