Hi all.
On Friday I got the unexpected news that I have cancer. After initially being diagnosed with what was believed to be Crohn’s disease I was booked for surgery to have a section of my bowel removed.
Then came the shock of a lifetime that the hospital had biopsied the section that had been removed and that I have cancer.
I’m still waiting for results of further scans and tests to determine the staging and possibility of spreading, which I should receive this week having had a further scan this morning.
Anyway if anyone has any advice on explaining it all to a 7 and 5 year old in simple yet informative ways I’m all ears.

Take care all x

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to hear that after an operation for Crohn's disease you've recently found out that you have cancer, presumably bowel cancer.

The community is divided up into groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the bowel cancer group where you can ask questions, share experiences and get support from others who may have had an implant.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post your question after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

Talking to children about cancer can be difficult so hopefully you'll find this information from Macmillan helpful. You can also order it in booklet form.

When you have a minute it, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
