Hi, I am new to the group. My Mum and Dad told me yesterday that Mum has rectal cancer and she is going for surgery tomorrow. They have known but kept it quiet for weeks. Dad is clearly devastated but won't accept any form of support. I am so worried about them both. I am terrified I will lose Mum but really worried about Dad too.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis but you have found a safe place to find some support.

As the one with the cancer I was totally open with everyone but for some, it’s hard and takes time to open up and accept help.

A cancer diagnosis brings a lot of confusion, stress and many questions but talking with people who are on the same type of journey helps a lot.

The Community has many dedicated support groups and I see that you have found our supportive Bowel (colon and rectum) cancer

Follow the link I've created above then hit ‘start a discussion’ and you are ready to go.

You could then copy and paste the information from this first post into your new discussion or you can just join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

You may also find our Carers only and Family and friends groups a benefit as you will connect with others supporting family through their cancer journey.

Can I also highlight our various Macmillan Support Line Services on 0808 808 00 00. This service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00 but check the link but you may find the service very busy at the moment.

Our Online Information and Support Section  is a good place to find information covering cancer diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.

    All the very best.
