Hi everyone. I’m a mum of a 13 year old girl who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer early February. She had surgery to remove her thyroid and all lymph nodes on one side of her neck. We are now 4 days into her low iodine diet in run up to uptake scan (a week off her meds). I’m struggling with the what’s acceptable amount of salt in foods. A lot of the milk substitutes have sea salt in them except coconut milk which she hates. I’m emailing different companies asking them what type of salt they use in their products to make sure it’s safe. It’s a minefield. What 0.0?g of salt is ok. Bread is a hard one too. Trying to make my own but failing miserably. She eats fruit and veg so dinners are not a problem. It’s the rest of the day. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance x

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that your daughter has recently been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

I can't help you with her diet but I can recommend that you join the thyroid cancer group where you can ask questions, share experience and get support from others with this type of cancer.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post your question after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute it, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your daughter's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
