Hi.

Any advice would be appreciated.

My dad saw an ENT specialist this morning who found a lump in dad's neck.  A biopsy was performed and dad was told that the results would be given in 5 days. However, just now, he received a call to attend for an MRI scan tomorrow morning.  The immediacy of this has scared him, though the caller said it was "just procedure".  Should we be extra worried?

Paul.

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

An MRI scan is used to build up a picture inside your dad's body. Doctors can use the scan, along with his biopsy, to help see if your dad's lump is cancerous or not. If you'd like to read more about what's involved click here.

Once your dad's doctors have the results of the biopsy, MRI scan and any other tests they need to run there will be a MDT (multidisciplinary) meeting to decide what treatment, if any your dad needs. Once this meeting has happened your dad will be advised of the results of the tests, etc and told if any treatment is recommended.

Do come back and let us know how he gets on

Thank you.  I really do appreciate your reply.

Is the abrupt nature of the call to arrange the MRI significant and/or cause for concern?

    Paul

  • Hi Paul, sorry for jumping in but as  says it’s all part of the process.

I have talked with others over the lockdown period and as there are spaces in the MRI bookings, medical teams are using the system as effectively as they can and backfilling appointments.

The good news is he is closer to getting a true picture as to what this is and what needs to be done.

    All the best.

  • I'm afraid I have no medical training so can't comment on the speed of your dad having an MRI.

You said that when he queried the speed he was told that it was "just procedure". If your dad has any further questions he could contact his clinical nurse specialist, if he's been assigned one, or phone his consultant's secretary to ask why he's being seen so quickly.

    Sorry I can't help further

My dad has just told me he has cancer.  He was not able to say much.  He told me his doctor said it was 'treatable'.  Dad asked if it was a 'death warrant' and the doctor said, "You are not going to die."  If anyone can advise me, I would be very grateful.  I have no experience of neck/throat cancer.

  • Hi

I'm really sorry to hear that your dad has been diagnosed with cancer but that's great news that he's been told it's treatable.

Could I recommend that you join the head and neck cancer group where you can ask questions, share experiences and get support from others with this type of cancer.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you feel up to it, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your dad's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
