Hi I am new here. I have not yet been diagnosed had an ultrasound done on Thursday to rule out a DVT doctor phoned me yesterday with results scan showed a large lymph node which looked very abnormal. Doctor has now urgently referred me to hematology. As before this large lymph node was discovered I have been having problems with shortness of breath feeling very tired some weight loss and itching. I also have some para-aortic lymph nodes which are slightly enlarged which were noted on a recent CTscan I had done. I am trying to think positive that it could be an infection or a autoimmune disease that has not been diagnosed. But I will not know until I have seen the haematologist. My mind at the moment is all over the place trying to keep myself busy so I don't have time to think about it.
Hi and welcome to the Online Community.
I am dropping in past from our Non-Hodgkin lymphoma group. I was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a rare type of NHL so have a good understanding of this journey.
The fact that you are now going to see a Haematologist suggests some type of blood related issue but at this stage it’s all a guess. There are over 80 types of Lymphoma and that does not even touch all the other blood conditions.
This is going to take time but what I can say is blood conditions are very treatable.
Happy to talk more on this thread or over on the NHL Group.
Thank you for your reply. Can I ask what to expect when I see the haematologist? I had some bloods done on the 29th April my haemoglobin was down slightly but in the permitted range as was white cell also platelets red blood cell haematocrit MCV and MCH lymphocyte was borderline low. I know some people have normal blood work so you can not go on blood work. Will I need to have a biopsy of the lymph node? Also will I have to have any other scans or tests?
Hi again , follow this link to Lymphoma Action to see what will happen over the next few weeks/months...... yes, this could take months.
You will be asked lots of questions, they will have a look at you, take some more bloods and most likely refer you for another CT/PET scan and with this will arrange for you to have a core biopsy or even a Bone Marrow Biopsy. Only once all this information is put together will you know 100% what this is.......... then they would look at the best way to treat you if required,
Some Haematologists will just refer you directly for a biopsy before that even see you.
Over my first 14 years nothing showed up in any of my bloods.
Could I suggest that you start a record of all the issues you have been having with a time frame so you are ready for when you are asked "have you any questions"
I would also advise you have someone with you as some consultants will fly through stuff and you may well miss what is said.
Always around to help as best as I can.
