I’m a 52 years old and year after my chemo n Radiotheraphy blitzed my rectal tumour no surgery required for now. I’ve been left with pelvic radiation proctitis had to look this up and a letter from my consultant says mines is over a large area as far as I know no treatment available.  I get a sigmoidoscopy every 5 months to check all ok. I missed my yearly ct scan to make sure no spreading due to covid so no idea when I get this to help me feel like yes am still ok for now !!!!!

ive been left with awful almost daily problems not always able to go out if at all just wondered if any other ladies or even gents have this problem or know if anyone whom has this and what they can take or do to help with symptoms. Didn’t want to go into too much detail on here.

my family and friends think cause I’m tumour clear that am ok and free of cancer I’m still on a wait and a watch and get depressed and angry that they don’t understand what this does to me and I should be happier and out there they just don’t get it feel like I can’t talk to anyone about it any advice or information I would be extremely grateful. Thank you x

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that you now have awful problems after treatment for a rectal tumour. It sounds very distressing but I'm sure there will be others here who can share their experiences with you.

Can I recommend that you join the bowel (colon and rectum) cancer group where you can ask questions, share experiences and get support from others with this type of cancer.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

By the way, don't worry about "going in to too much detail" as I doubt it'll be anything that the members of the group haven't heard before!

When you have a minute it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi Purplelady08 I have just been diagnosed with radiation proctitis although my cancer was womb but I recurred and had salvage Brachy and this is a side effect. I had a colonscopy and I have 10cm of tissue affected in my rectum. I have just finished a course of perisdone enemas which has helped but I still have loose stool and urgency. I am going to contact the hospital for medication to slow me down which was suggested. I trying to sus which foods affect me and I'm going to change my diet and eat more often small meals. I know because we no longer have our tumors doesn't mean we have to put up. I went to my GP with my symptoms and she put me on the 2 week referral.  There are treatments. Stay safe Dawn
