Hi. My 76 year old dad was recently diagnosed with Upper rectal cancer. Today he recieved a letter from the hospital and we are unsure about all the wording and what it all means. The diagnosis states.....
Adenocarcinoma of rectosigmoid.
MRI rectum March 20 rectosigmoid tumour with tumour nodularity threatening CRM and extramural vascular invasion T3c EMVI positive.
He was due to a disfunctioning stoma but because of the current Coronavirus it was cancelled and he has just had 5 days of neoadjuvant radiotherapy.
please could somebody explain the diagnosis and what stage it is ?
many thanks

Hi Claire and a very warm welcome to the online community
I'm sorry to hear that your dad has recently been diagnosed with rectal cancer and that you've had a letter from the hospital which you don't understand.
As we're not medically trained it might be difficult for anyone here to interpret the letter especially as we don't have access to the rest of your dad's medical records. However, could I recommend that you join the bowel cancer group where you can ask questions, share experiences and get support from others living with this type of cancer.
To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
If your dad has a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) assigned to him then he could give her a call and she'll be able to explain what the letter means in laymen's terms. If no one has been assigned to him yet then he could phone his consultant's secretary and she can arrange for someone to call him back.
When you have a minute it would be useful if could pop something about your dad's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
