Hi everyone I'm newly diagnosed with low grade non Hodgkin's follicular lymphoma my oncologist wants me to do a 4 weeks of rituxmab or watch and wait I'm not sure what to do I'm very scared as it has not even sunk in yet that I have this so confused and my oncologist didn't even spend much time with me yet. Has anyone had rituxmab as first treatment and what was your experience so scared help.

  • Hi and welcome to the site do post your question here in the FNHL group

    https://community.macmillan.org.uk/cancer_types/follicular_lymphoma/

I had an aggressive type so had to have treatment, if I was in your situation I would be pushing the consultant for time to talk this through especially as its all new. If they are say rituximab only have they told you the stage and grade? was it stage 1 ?

You need to ask why they recommend treatment rather than watch and wait and what benefit do they expect from treatment.

Often with fnhl people go on watch and wait, as it is a type that can come and go its called waxing and waning, when it flares up or is impacting on quality of life thats when they would normally suggest treatment. Two key points for you just in case they have not been mentioned, first blood cancers are not like solid tumour cancers and many are very treatable and the stage is only used to inform treatment and has no relevance to outcome - I was stage 4b and had 8 rounds of treatment 10 years ago. The other point is those that can think of FNHL as a chronic disease that is only treated when needed, if you can get your head around this it helps as when we are told we have cancer you expect treatment quickly and with your type thats not always necessary.

as any questions in the group and someone will try to answer.
