Hi

I'm really struggling at the moment. My mum was diagnosed with hodgkins lymphoma in December and we were told on Christmas eve it was stage 4, she is in and out of hospital the week after Chemotherapy (ABVD) with constant infections and low neutrafils. She's had 2 months of chemo of 6 and it's so hard seeing her in pain. She also has early stages of endrametrial something or other too.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your mum struggling with her ABVD. This treatment is hard work and folks will often have hospital admissions.

I have lived with area type of Non Hodgkins Lymphoma for over 20 years so do understand the challenges that a blood cancer can bring.

Can I direct you to this link to our very supportive Hodgkin lymphoma group as this will open up your concerns to a wider audience who know exactly what you are going through at the moment.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

I will keep an eye open for you in the group xx

    Thank you

  • Welcome.

I don't know if you're aware of this but stage 4 has a bit of a different meaning in terms of prognosis when it comes to lymphoma than it does with the solid cancers.  I don't know what the treatment goals are for your mother, but it would be good to clarify that with her haematologist as stage 4 is still extremely treatable.

Unfortunately, the risk of infection is ever present while we're undergoing treatment.  There are some things we can do to mitigate those risks ourselves - impeccable hygiene, including food hygiene, is one - and some which our doctors do by way of prophylactic drugs and immune boosters.  Still, the risk can't be eliminated entirely and 20% of us will acquire an infection at some stage during our treatment.

There is no excuse for your mum's pain not being well managed so please follow this up.  Pain makes everything else even harder to deal with.
