Hi. So what brings me here? I was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 28 so underwent chemo, mastectomy (one breast) radiotherapy & reconstruction. I was told I had heart failure & kidney disease a few years later but neither affects my day to day life and there have been no problems since. My mum was then diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 so some genetic testing was done which has revealed I have a marker albeit VUS. It has now been recommended that I have double mastectomy & oophorectomy and, although friends & family are great soundboards, I guess I need advice from people who have been through it :)
Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community at what sounds like a very difficult time for you.
I can completely understand why you'd like to chat to others who have had to make a similar treatment decision so could I suggest a couple of groups for you to join. The first is the breast cancer group and the second the ovarian cancer group. You will find people in both of these groups who will be willing to share their experiences with this surgery.
I am not sure if having a VUS marker means that you are BRCA positive but, if you are, then we also have a BRCA positive group where you could speak to others about genetic testing and risk-reducing surgery.
To join any or all of these groups just click on the links I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the pages that open. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
