Hi.  Just signed up today.  I dont know if my mum has cancer but fear she has.  She is 65 and has had raised liver enzymes (×10) since November, and so far has had an ultra sound scan which showed prominent bile ducts, a gastroscopy which showed gastritis and we are awaiting the results of her CT and seeing consultant on Tuesday.  She's not eating very much, is being sick a couple of times a day and has lost just over 2 stone now. She's suffering from upper abdo pain particularly after trying to eat a small amount.  She is so weak, and think she should be in hospital. (An added complication is she's also in heart failure). This past 6 days waiting for her appointment following the scan being reported has felt like 6 years.  Whilst I am scared, as my mum is my best friend I just want to know. I am hoping for the best but fearing its the worst. X

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your mum

A suspected cancer diagnosis can bring a lot of stress, confusion and many questions on all the family but talking with people who are on the same journey can help a lot.

Can I first direct you to these links to our very supportive Liver cancer and Bile duct cancer groups as this will open up your concerns to a wider audience who know exactly what you are going through at the moment.

Just follow the link I have created then hit the ‘Join This Group’ tab just under the main group name, then go to the 'Start a Discussion' tab and set up your very own Discussion and introduce yourself to the group and ask your questions.

You may also find our Carers Only and Friends and Family groups to be good places where you can connect with others supporting family through their cancer journey but more importantly the carers care for each other.

You may find our various Macmillan Support Line Services to be helpful - call them on 0808 808 00 00 This free service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00 but check the link.

We also have our ‘Ask an Expert’. section where you can post questions to our mostly Volunteer Experts but please allow 2 working days to get a reply.

Our Online Information and Support Section  is a good place to find information covering cancer diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers.

    All the very best.

    Hi tigerlily20

I am on the same position you were in when writing the above comment. My was diagnosed with an in operatable tumor on her bile duct on Tuesday, making it worse is we can't be with her through her initial diagnosis and treatment. I'm too scared to Google anything on this as I feel it will make things worse.  My dad is housebound and mum is his carer so having to work through getting social services involved along with supporting mum. Mum is different in a matter of days, she seems so weak and feeble which I do understand but it's scaring us even more, dad is constantly sobbing and it's breaking our hearts, I feel for you and hope the initial treatment with your mum was successful. Mum is 78 in May and has always been the cog that enables our family, I feel so sad for her. She is an amazing mum and friend and I want to ensure I give her the right support

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to you as well.

Cancer in the family brings numerous challenges across the family and it can be very stressful having to deal with all the parts of this journey.

Do connect in with the groups I highlighted in my post above as talking with others in the same boat does help a lot.

    ((hugs)) from a distance.

    Thank you

I think you should take the word die out of the paragraph though, I don't mind but I'm sure it may upset others x

  • Thanks Lola I will do that - keep well.
