Hi everyone! I've just turned 37, I have two children aged 10 and 7, and last week I was given the devastating blow that I have inoperable metastatic bowel cancer. I have a tumour outside the colon along with three areas of disease in my liver and one in my lung. I was told that my treatment will now be palliative. I'm extremely frightened, and struggling to accept that I can't be helped. I have no symptoms or pain whatsoever other than abdominal cramps after eating large meals and i guess i am desperate for someone to say miracles can happen!! I am hoping that i respond well to the chemotherapy that I'm due to start soon, is that a possibility or a pipe dream! Is there anyone out there in a similar situation? X x
Dear Boppins, I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but you have done the right thing joining the forum. A community champion will be along shortly to direct you to the right group’s for your disease, but I just wanted to welcome you and say that just because the word palliative has been mentioned it does not mean you won’t receive treatment, it’s just that it won’t be curative, many people are living with cancers that are incurable and prognosis is based on statistics and you are not a statistic, every cancer patient is unique. You will find many people here who have already travelled the road you are about to set out on and will be able to support you on your journey.
best wishes

Hi and a second welcome to the online community
I see that you've already had a lovely reply from Jane who has explained that having palliative treatment doesn't mean you won't be treated, just not cured. However, it's natural to be scared and I remember only too well how shocked and numb I felt when I was told three years ago that I had cancer. You might like to take a look at this information from Macmillan that talks about how you feel when you've just been diagnosed.
This community is divided into specific groups where you can ask questions and share from the experiences of others as well as get support. The groups that I'd suggest you might like to take a look at are the bowel cancer, secondary liver cancer and secondary lung cancer groups.
To join all or any of them just click on the links I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the pages that open. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
When you feel up to it, it would be really useful if could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
