Hi
My husband had bowel surgery June 2018 which was successful but unfortunately it has spread to his liver. He's had 11 cycles of chemo (2 different types) with no effect at all. He's been referred to hospice who are brilliant also the community nurse. I'm frightened if I don't realise when the end is. He doesn't say much about how he feels. I am an emotional person and cry a lot. I know this doesn't help him. What can I expect? I know if he gives up eating the end is near.
Thanks for any advise.
Hi
I am sad to hear about your husband. It must be a very tough time for you both.
I think you’ve asked a really good question and it’s one I put to my hospice nurses. They said it’s hard to give an answer but their job is to know when that time comes. They will put together the whole picture of how I am physically, how I’m eating and drinking and how mobile I am and I don’t know what else. I found this a very comforting answer. It helped me to feel safe.
So I would suggest talking to your hospice and community nurses. We do have a section here where you can ask a question on line to the Macmillan nurses. Take a look here:
https://community.macmillan.org.uk/cancer_experiences/ask_the_expert/
It can really help to talk to others who are going through something similar. I know it’s not a club anyone would want to join but I hope you might find that the group supporting someone with incurable cancer is a safe place to talk about your feelings and share experiences

I wish you all the best

Hi Daloni
Thanks for your message. To feel safe is very important I agree. We have a palliative nurses' visit today so I shall ask her some questions but not in front of my husband as he doesn't want to know whats going to happen.
Many say you have to take each day at a time which is what we are trying to do. His appetite has dropped quiet a long and his energy levels are virtually nil.
We are grateful for the time he has had up to now as he's had 18 months since diagnosis and the bowel op.
Thanks Demmi x
Hi
I hope the nurses can answer your questions. I know everyone will be telling you to look after yourself and I guess it might be hard to imagine what that might look like. Perhaps that’s another question the nurses can help you with.
lots of love
