Hi . My mum has just been diagnosed with lung cancer. They say theres no cure but its treatable. They waiting for results of biopsy and today she is having a pet scan. Im.trying to find out if she has to wait for full diagnosis to apply for pip and a blue badge. She is 72 are there any other help she can get? Thank you

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear about your mum's recent diagnosis and it's natural that you want to try and get things sorted for her.

Could I suggest that you ring the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 0000 and speak to one of the welfare rights advisors as they'll be able to tell you what she is eligible for. It's free to call and they are available Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm.

  • Hi Daisydoo27, the short answer is if your mum's s been diagnosed with cancer, she could apply for PIP n a blue badge straight away. Depending on what her prognosis is depends how swiftly they will process the PIP application. If she channels the PIP application through a local day hospice or McMillan/Maggie's centre that'll speed things up too.

U might want to ring the helpline on 0808 808 0000, 8am to 8pm 7 days a week, to check out what other financial help she can get, eg free prescriptions- not just for cancer related drugs n check with them re the PIP n  blue badge info,  (just in case I'm out of date)

On a different subject, how about joining the Lung cancer group, to get advice/ support for your mum and the Family and friends group, for yourself?

Many folk in the community have cancers that are treatable but not curable n there are more drugs being developed all the time.

Hope your mum soon gets the biopsy n PET scan results through, then you'll have more of an idea of her treatment plan.

Sorry this crossed with Latchbrook's reply !
