Melanoma three times, not spotted by hospital

Hello. My husband is in his mid 50s and was diagnosed with melanoma in March from a mole that was growing awry. It had been looked at by the hospital some years before. Diagnosed stage one, surgery performed. A month later I spotted something very small on his hairline by his ear. I made him go back. Hospital said they didn’t think it was anything but biopsy was done. Stage one melanoma again. Further surgery done and one lymph node extracted. It was clean. Last week I saw a huge - about an inch - very clear melanoma on his scalp under his hair on the top of his head. Has hospital appointment tomorrow. It’s obviously been there some time. I can’t believe the hospital has missed two melanomas, nor that they didn’t check his scalp after they found the first one on his scalp. I’m so angry. I just don’t know what to do. These are three separate melanomas within six months.

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear that your husband has been diagnosed with 3 melanomas over the last six months. It must be devastating for you both and I can understand how scary it is as I was diagnosed with melanoma 3 years ago.

Could I suggest that you join us over in the melanoma group as there's nothing quite like talking things through with other people who understand how you feel.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself or post a question after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

I'm not sure from your post if your husband's second and third melanomas were missed when he had his 3 monthly check-ups with the dermatologist and you spotted them in between these appointments. Hopefully this third lesion won't turn out to be melanoma.

I've had two suspicious lesions removed (one was melanoma and one wasn't) but on neither of these occasions was I checked over for more. I assume that's because you're just booked in for an excision with a plastic surgeon and this isn't arranged to coincide with a check-up with a dermatologist.

I'm now on 3 monthly check-ups but if I spot anything concerning in between those check-ups I can contact my SCNS who can arrange for me to see my consultant.

I do understand that you feel your husband has been let down and he could speak to the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) at his hospital and ask them to investigate what went wrong with his care.

When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your husband's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Ok, thank you, Latchbrook. I’ve added details to my profile and joined the melanoma group. I’m pretty sure this third one is serious. It’s nodular and large. We’ll find out more tomorrow.

  • Do let me know how you get on tomorrow . I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.
