My mom's cancer has come back

After what we thought had been a successful procedure plus hysterectomy my mom had her first 2 month check up following cancer of the peritoneum.

Her CA125 proteins were down to 40 after being 3000 so chemo was affective hence the operation. The reading is now 400 and was told yesterday that it has returned as metastatic serous carcinoma in the same area.

I guess I'm back on the rollercoaster again and after feeling hopeful feel shocked and scared for her again. She is devastated.

Reaching out for advice on how I can be there for her (we live 100 miles away from each other) - I face time and visit when I can but its hard being so far away - makes me feel useless.

  • Hi and welcome to the Online Community, although I am sorry to see you finding us and so sorry to hear about your mum.

A cancer diagnosis can bring a lot of stress, but a relapse is much more confusion and brings lots of questions and challenges on all the family.

I was the one with cancer so may not have the practical experience to help you but talking with people who are on the same journey can help a lot.

I see that you have found the Peritoneal cancer Forum - this is s good place to ask questions about treatments

Follow the link above and go to the 'Start a Discussion' tab just under the main group name and set up your own Discussion and introduce yourself to the group.

We do have these forums where you can connect with others supporting family and friends through their cancer journey: Carers Forum  and Friends and Family Forum

You may find our various Macmillan Support Line Services to be helpful - call them on 0808 808 00 00This free service covers Emotional Support, Practical Information. Clinical Information, Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00 but check the link.

We also have our ‘Ask an Expert’. section where you can post questions to our mostly Volunteer Experts but please allow 2 working days to get a reply.

Talking to people face to face can help a lot so check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Supportin your area or a Maggie’s Centre as these folks are amazing.

When you feel up to it try putting some information in your profile. This really helps others when answering. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. Just click on YOUR username, select 'Edit Profile'. Put as much or as little in your profile and you can amend it at any time - you can see members profiles by hitting our forum names.

    All the very best.

    Hi

I think has given you some great pointers. I’d just like to add one thing. Never underestimate the importance of a daily phone call, especially in these days and weeks just after your mom has received such devastating news. I say that from experience.
