Anal cancer treatment

Hi, two weeks ago went for colonoscopy after failing the poo test! Had no symptoms I was aware of so was stunned to be told I have a cancer just inside the rectum. Have had CT and MRI scans so waiting to hear what happens next.

Anyone had the same diagnosis and had treatment not involving a colostomy as everything I've seen seems to imply thats inevitable..

Thanks

welcome to the online community, sorry you've had to come and find us.

I'm from the breast group so I don't have a great deal of knowledge of colorectal other than my brother had some investigations done a couple of years ago, he had no symptoms just signed up for a screening programme as we have a local specialist unit.

Other than that, as I understand it a colostomy isn't inevitable and even if they do perform one it can often be reversed.

I had a left sided mastectomy and although it's annoying that I had to have it, at least I'm still here to complain about it.

Now if you wander on over to the specialist group you'll get more personal experiences .

try not to panic, we all hear the word 'cancer' and fear the worst, my brother had excellent treatment and was found to have nothing sinister, the surgeon was very thorough indeed.

    hugs

  • Hi ,

Welcome, although I’m very sorry that you find yourself here. I’m from the General Discussion group. Before directing you to a group where you can find others in the same situation as yourself is it Anal or Rectal cancer you’ve been diagnosed with? These are 2 quite separate diagnosis’s & involve different forms of treatment I believe. If it’s Anal Cancer you’ve been diagnosed with then follow the above link & pop on over & join us on the Anal Cancer Group or if it’s Rectal cancer there’s the Bowel (colon and rectal) cancer forum. You’ll receive a lovely welcome in either group & it’s a great place to get support, advice from others that have already been through treatment etc., & good tips on how to deal with things in general.
