I’ve recently been diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer and had a stay in hospital to drain ascites. I am yet to have my first meeting with an oncologist who presumably will start my treatment- chemo first then op. My biggest problem at present is that I feel constantly sick despite being on two anti sickness drugs. Has anyone experienced this, even before chemo?
Hi
I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis and about the nausea. It’s the pits.
I know nausea is common in ovarian cancer and especially where there’s ascites. I have not experienced it myself although I have had (do have) nausea associated with chemo, pain killers and kidney problems. It’s something I’d talk to the nurses and doctors about. There’s at least three anti sickness drugs I know of and have been prescribed at different times - domperidone, metachlopramide and ondansetron. They each work in different ways.
The self help remedies I’ve found helpful include using ginger (lemon and ginger tea, for example, or lemongrass and ginger cordial) and nibbling on a bland cracker. Drinking plenty of fluids helps me. Some people find the sea sickness bands you wear on your wrists and that put pressure on a specific area helpful.
I do hope the nausea will start to resolve once the fluid is drained off. I’m sure you’re more aware than you’d like to be that anti emetics can cause constipation and it’s worth getting on top of this before it gets on top of you - but again you must talk to your own healthcare professionals as there are some specific considerations when managing constipation in patients like you.
It is worth posting your question to our digital nurses in the Ask an Expert section on this community.

Finally, have you read this on the main information section?
I hope you feel better soon

Hello , welcome to the online community, I have just read your post and noticed you have done your profile and joined and posted your question in the ovarian group, great.
My cancer was metastatic melanoma which had spread to my abdominal and pelvic lymph nodes and to my left ovary. I felt sick before I started treatment and was put on an anti nausea drug which made me feel worse but there are apparently lots and so when one doesn’t suit the drs can prescribe a different one.
You may find this information on the Macmillan site useful, https://www.macmillan.org.uk/information-and-support/ovarian-cancer/coping/side-effects-and-symptoms/eating-problems/feeling-sick.html
especially about small meals and ginger, there was a programme on that recently on ITV Save Money Good Health which mentioned some ginger sweets for car sickness as well.
I hope you find some ideas that might suit.
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. There are some useful tips there.
