Hi everyone. My first post and I hope you lovely lot can help me. My mum has breast cancer with mets to her lung, and her oncologist has asked if she wants to take place in some drug trials. She does, feeling that if at least she can help someone else in future, it is worth doing ( she is an amazing woman) The trials will require her to attend The Christie in Manchester more frequently. Can she get transport covered? She lives a good hour away and isn't really fit enough for public transport travel. T.I.A

Hello , I’m sorry to hear of your Mums diagnosis, I hope that you are both keeping well at the moment, and wanted to welcome you to the site.

You've asked a question about trials and will her transport costs be covered, from my personal experience when trials were being discussed with me they were going to be refunded and that’s one of the questions the nurses usually cover when you have a chat about trials, as well as the pros and cons of joining a trial. (I didn’t do the trial in the end as I could not wait for the extra biopsies to be done and wanted to start treatment as early as possible) Your Mum might have a contact number of the person she saw as they welcome extra questions and should be available to ask extra stuff after the bank holiday. While you are waiting for them to reopen tomorrow you may want to read the cancer research link below

and also possibly this Macmillan link about help with transport and parking.

Another champ who may have a bit more to add is , I’m tagging her in but not sure if she’s available today.

You may wish to join one of the groups on here to raise the question again with people who have been on a trail or to get some support for you coping at this time of uncertainty so I’m going to put a few links in, I hope you don’t mind.

Hello everyone,  not sure this is the right place to post but I'm very new to all of this.

A close friend and neighbour has just been diagnosed with a terminal mouth cancer. We are totally floored by this as we thought it was an abscess and nothing more so it was a huge shock.

We've just started his treatment which is going to be chemo x 7 and 6 weeks of radiation every day.

I've been told that he can get a free taxi to and from his appointments but cant find anything out about it at all online or anywhere else. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this at all or can point me in the best direction?

We are going for chemo tomorrow so will ask the staff there but thought this would be a good place to ask as well.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi

The cost of travelling to cancer treatment can be significant. At the hospitals I have attended there have been two types of help: hospital transport to get you to and from hospital and reimbursement of transport costs.

The help getting to and from is good for people who are not physically able to travel but it’s time consuming as it involves waiting for the transport. It can make for very long days, I’m told.

Reimbursement can be made if you qualify, usually via a means tested benefit such as Universal Credit. You have to fill in a form and show proof of getting the benefit.

    There’s more info here:

    I hope this helps

    Hi

I think KT has given you some great info. I’ve just recently finished a clinical trial in which my travel expenses were covered. As I had visits to the hospital once a week for eight months, this was a significant amount. Not all trials cover travel expenses and it’s important to ask about this.

There are occasions when hospital transport can be offered if patients are not well enough to travel - see my answer above.

The best people to ask about all this are the nurses at the trials unit. They know everything.

    Good luck!
