Hello, this is my first post so here goes!!.....

I was diagnosed with stage 2 malignant melanoma on my forearm  just over 2 years ago. I had WLE and SLNB and all came back clear. I see my cancer nurse every 3 months for check ups (or cancer club as I like to call it!).

My employer was great, really supportive. As part of my job we have outdoor areas that we have to cover but they said that it was absolutely fine that I wouldn’t do the outdoor jobs (there is a team of us so the work would still be done).

Today my supervisor told me there was no reason why I couldn’t stand outside all day and when I tried to explain his response was “well you can get skin cancer through the window of your car so are you going to stop driving too?”

Am I being unreasonable not wanting to be outside all day?Am I being overly sensitive?

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies with some advice!

  • hello and welcome to the community, although sorry to hear your employer is unsympathetic to your cancer. Cancer patients have rights under the law to protect them from any kind of discrimination in the work place. Macmillan have some facts on the subject if you click HERE (Your rights at Work). You may also like to post your question in the Ask a work support advisor . There you will get expert advice. If you feel like talking to someone in person, the free helpline is open until 8pm each day on 0808 808 0000. They have experts on hand to advise. And of course we have the Melanoma Group where you can share with others in similar situations. I hope this helps. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.
